The fabulous lakeside camp was not very far from the trail, which, as you can see here, descends from this location into the valley known as Upper Basin 'round these parts. Far, far in the distance, you can just make out a saddle below a set of craggy peaks, the infamous Mather Pass. My goal, for the following day, was to cross this huge valley and then, energy permitting, the pass as well. How hard could it be?
