As I was making my way across the plateau, A couple passed me going the other direction, away from the pass. It's a popular trail, so that wouldn't have been unusal except for the fact that they were running! In cross-country running shoes, shorts and t-shirts, and no equipment except their fanny-packs, each with two liters of water, they ran on by as if they were simply out for a jog in their neighborhood. Where did they come from? It added a nice surreal touch to the morning.

Here you can see the trail as it transitions into uphill mode again. At the top of this rise is another, final shelf before reaching the foot of the pass.
